Hi! I’m Joey Chan, a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). I’m advised by Prof. Yue Guo and co-advised by Prof. Jiawei Han.

I’m an Amazon AI PhD Fellow and currently an Applied Scientist at Amazon on the JONAS team.

My research lies at the intersection of large language models, information retrieval, agentic AI, and AI for science and healthcare. I study how language models can leverage external knowledge, structured scientific information, and user context to reason over complex biomedical problems and support scientific discovery.

I’m particularly interested in retrieval-augmented and agentic systems for personalized health, drug discovery, and computational biology.
